April 2000 Breed of the Month

Komondor

Komondor

ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT

A rare but very old breed, the Komondor was used to protect flocks of sheep in Hungary. It appears to have the same ancestry as the long legged dogs of the Russian steppes. Always white and covered with long cords or string like matted hair, these huge dogs lived outdoors with flocks in all extremes of weather. Their purpose was to guard and protect sheep from any marauders be they human or animal. The Komondor is still used today throughout the American continent for just this purpose.

TEMPERAMENT

The breed is wary of strangers due to its background and because its corded coat falls over its eyes and restricts its vision. Care should be taken with children for this reason.

HEALTH MATTERS

Generally healthy, hip dysplasia is a problem and breeding stock must be X-rayed after the age of two years. Its teeth should be cleaned and nails checked routinely every week. As it is a large dog with an immense coat, the Komondor must have a nutritionally balanced diet. Two or three small meals a day, without soy products, are better than one large one. This is a simple preventative measure against gastric torsion. It is also wise not to allow the Komondor to exercise just after the dog has eaten. It does need very long walks on a regular basis, so it is not a good breed for owners who are not able or prepared to provide this. This breed must be taught not to put up a struggle early in life - it is much too big and strong to wrestle with.

SPECIAL CARE AND TRAINING

The coat of the Komondor requires much care and attention. This chore cannot be overlooked or taken lightly. The Komondor should he socialized early and obedience training is of great importance.

ADAPTABILITY

Because of its size and unique coat, the Komondor is much happier in a country setting than in the city. It should never be cramped or cooped up as this is contrary to its nature.

ESSENTIALS OF THE BREED

The breed is very large, over 25 inches/63 cm in many cases, and weighs up to 95-100 pounds/ 43-45 kg. Always white with dark pigment on its nose and eyelids, there should be no albino characteristics found in this breed. The Komondor is large, full-bodied, heavy boned, with a long natural tail, large neck and expressive eyes,. The Komondor is completely covered with long white ribbons of matted coat material that naturally parts along its backbone and covers the entire animal. This large breed has a very graceful gait.

For show purposes the Komondor is presented gleaming white and in huge coat. This is no mean feat for the Komondor requires up to two full days to dry completely after a bath! This breed is only for the dedicated.
