Lhasa Apso

Although first introduced into the Western world in 1901 the Lhasa Apso did not appear in the United States until 1935 when the 13th Dalai Lama presented C. Suydam Cutting of Hamilton Farms 3 dogs.

The Lhasa Apso is a tough and independent breed that expects to l ive by its own rules. As loving and affectionate as the Lhasa can be, it has a mind of its own. There are few breeds that surpass the Lhasa for devotion and companionship, if it receives the affection and firm hand that it needs. The Lhaso needs to understand it cannot do just as it pleases otherwise it will test your patience and endurance to their limits.

Early and continual socialization is a must and originating in Tibet it is not surprising the Lhaso likes heights. They are excellent climbers and you should not be surorised to find your Lhasa perched on top of a piece of furniture.

Happily the Lhasa Apso can provide its owner with campionship for many years. Do not be deceived, however, by the Lhasa's size and glamorized Western appearance into believing this is a delicate creature in need of indulgence. This breed is as sturdy and resilient as the Tibetan people.

Periodic trips to the groomer for a pet clip and twice week brushing will keep the Lhasa's coat manageable.
