October 1999 Breed of the Month

PAPILLON - EPAGNEUL NAIN CONTINENTAL

This energetic toy breed dates back to the sixteenth century when it was known as the "dwarf spaniel". Many were included in ladies portraits and Marie Antoinette was an admirer of the breed as early as 1545.

Spain deserves credit for much of the breed's popularity. Italy also played a key role although France ultimately contributedpapillon the breed's name, Papillon, which is French for "butterfly". Many were transported from Italy to france on the back of mules.

During the days of Louis XVI, the dwarf spaniel developed an erect-type ear that resembles the shape of a butterfly and that is how it got its name. Both the drop ear (Phalene) and erect ear are allowed throughout Europe and the United States. The toy breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1935.

The breed can be quiet and affectionate and, consequently, appeals to a wide range of people. Despite its size, the Papillon is a hardy breed able to withstand the effects of both hot and cold weather. They are agressive ratters and require no coddling.

The Papillon is a delightful dog to have around and to bring up in the ways of the family. It is very much all dog and not at all a delicate shrinking flower.

The breed should be easily house trained and is naturally very clean. Care should be taken over a puppy jumping off high furniture because although its legs are strong they can break while the puppy is young and inexperienced.

The Papillon is a wonderful little worker in the Obedience Ring. It takes to it with a will and enjoys itself immensely, as it does in the Show Ring.

Its coat is easily papilloncared for and should be bathed and brushed as necessary. The nails should be clipped with a professional nail clipper once a week. Similarly the teeth should be cleaned weekly - a small, hard biscuit will help to keep both gums and teeth clean.

The Papillon is an alert, energetic breed that is as much at home on the farm as in an apartment. Although it is small and quiet, it is a clever watchdog. The Papillon travels well and adapts to any climate. this delightful breed loves to walk and looks stylish as it prances along.

The drop ear Phalene is recognized in Europe as a separate breed that is shown alongside erect-eared specimans, as Papillons in the United Kingdom and the United States
